March 29th. March 29th, March 29th, March 29th.

I miss love.
Three Things.

I had a conversation with God today, which I will try to relate to you in the clearest terms possible... although please note that this will be a somewhat stylized transcription at best.

Me: Why me?
God: Come on, you can't be serious. This again?
Me: No, seriously. Why is it never me?
God: I don't know what to tell you. It's just not.
Me: Oh...............
God: ... come on, Michael. Don't be like that.
Me: Oh no, I know... it's just... you know, I don't get it. I mean I brush my teeth and fold my clothes and everything.
God: Someday it'll be you.
Me: Aww... you're just saying that.
God: No, seriously... just wait.
Me: Isn't that what you told me three years ago?
God: Meditate on that.

Hmmm.

Saw Eternal of the Spotless Mind again tonight... saw it yesterday too. I think I could watch that movie everyday. Then again, it really messes with my productivity. God I hope I pass all my classes this semester. There're only two that I'm really worried about, but still.... two out of four isn't necessarily a good ratio. I just really don't care any more. I care about my life and my problems and not any body elses. If I really want to know more about America, I'll buy a book and read about it. If I want to learn the meaning of Thoreau's Walden, I'll read it on my own time and then maybe look up stuff about it on the internet. But man... let me do it on my own... especially if you're really not going to inspire me to actually want to learn it.

Cold Stone officially sucks. My boss never talks to us (me, in particular) unless we do something wrong. Then he roles his eyes and barks out monosyllabic commands and then still doesn't talk. It's hideous. It makes my skin crawl. If I quit though, I won't have any more money to see Eternal Sunshine with. I'm looking around.

I can't shut my head up. I always begin writing things in my mind, and they are so damned brilliant and I know I should get them written (or typed) down, and since in my room in Olathe, the computer is closer than a pen and paper (emotionally, at least), typed is what I did. It didn't come out quite as I had imagined it, but, then again, I think all good writing takes revision, which is what this will get someday... maybe as a poem or as the beginning of a story or a novel or something (although I dunno about writing in the second person). Some of my images didn't come out how I want them either. And there's more I could/need to add, and some that I need to take out. Maybe someday you'll see that version. But here's the rough one.

There’s something about being home. Maybe it’s the smell. That clean, cool, warm smell. It’s reminiscent to you in the same way as the feeling of your face after crying hard… so hard your face feels like something like a sponge and your nose is dripping more than it ever does these days. My God, the air you breathe when you’re at home. You try to get your apartment now to smell like home does. You try switching to the old laundry detergent your mom used. You change cleaning products, and at least consider attempting the same regement of cleanliness she constantly achieved. But to no avail. No avail at all. No, maybe it isn’t just the smell of the actual house, with its old wood and its thick plaster walls and its carpet that has never felt the flow of keg beer running through its pile… maybe it’s the neighborhood itself. The distant rock quarries filling the air with invisible dust, the suburbian lawns – fertilized, green, mowed weekly (at least). Not like your lawn now… gnarly and mowed once every other Sunday by some speckle-faced kid earning nothing to the six seventy five you used to get for mowing lawns back home… do they even ship fertilizer to this town. Maybe it’s not the smell at all… maybe it’s everything… the sounds of the train’s clack-clack in the distance, overpowering the highway that runs lazily past the outskirts of your hometown. The angles of light from the soft orange street lamp outside glaring in bars through the slightly dusty mini-blinds. It’s not like the light your apartment gets… the blaring white headlights shining through the window and then moving slowly across the wall as the owner wheels drunkenly home. Everything at home is sharp and neat and still intriguing, when lookd at from some distance… which is what they used to say about you when you lived there. Now you are nothing… or less. You are a dull, grey pebble worn down in the bottom of a river with all the other lifeless pebbles. Until you go home.

Sorry.

When I look in the mirror, I can't believe what I see
Tell me, who's that funky dude, staring back at me?
Broken, beaten down can't even get around
Without an old-man cane, I fall and hit the ground
Shivering in the cold, I'm bitter and alone

Excuse the bitchin', I shouldn't complain
I should have no feeling, 'cuz feeling is pain
As everything I need, is denied me
And everything i want, is taken away from me
But who do I got to blame? Nobody but me

…And I don't wanna be an old man anymore
It's been a year or two since I was out on the floor
Shakin' booty, makin' sweet love all the night
It's time I got back to the Good Life
It's time i got back, it's time i got back
And I don't even know how I got off the track
I wanna go back…Yeah!

Screw this crap, I've had it! I ain't no Mr. Cool
I'm a pig, I'm a dog, so 'scuse me if I drool
I ain't gonna hurt nobody, ain't gonna 'cause a scene
I just need to admit that I want sugar in my tea
Hear me? Hear me? I want sugar in my tea!

I want to go back, I want to go back
And I don't even know how I got off the track
It's time i got back, it's time i got back
And I don't even know how I got off the track
I want to go back…Yeah!

Blegh. David is gone. Yesterday I had a fairly identical day to Saturday. He and I went to the KSU baseball game with Jason and Kelsey... and then he left. Then J-Dub, K-Swiss and I fired up the grill and had ourselves one hardcore awesome meal. Then Kyle and Smolls came over, and we went and saw Dawn of the Dead.

Interestingly enough, Entertainment Weekly gave Dawn of the Dead an A, a grade they normally reserve for excellent movies. In this case, I believe they were mistaken... it was awful. Bad writing, bad acting... just... bad. The first part was good though, and it did have its moments. Otherwise, you ought to wait until it comes out on video... or never see it. It isn't a crucial addition to your film repetoire (spelling?)

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, however, is excellent, and as mentioned before, you should see it. You should take me with you when you see it. Or at least call me and see if I can go. I bought the soundtrack today and am listening to it in an effort to tide myself over between showings. I get like this after I see a movie I really like. It passes in a few days usually. I also drove by the theatre (to check to see when it's playing today, because I really don't feel like being in my apartment), and I really liked the tagline... "You can erase someone from your mind. Getting them out of your heart is another story." Feels somewhat applicable these days.

Saturday, March 20

Meet me in Montauk. I went and saw Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind tonight, which is probably underwhelming to some of you, but I was pretty excited. It was great. Great. It was kind of a Vanilla Sky sort of movie, but I liked it even better. It makes you think of all of those times you wish you could forget about someone and remove them completely from your memory... but how much that would suck. That was a brilliant thought I just laid down. Yup.

So anyway... go see it. Unless you're going to be one of those people who looks to the person next to you (friend, boyfriend, sibling, whatever) and whispers "What the hell is going on?", to which your companion giggles, causing you to giggle, and then you talk about how horrible it was after the movie because you basically just gave up looking at it as a possibly good film that moment you decided to orate your inner confusion. If you're going to be like that, then don't go. Or at least don't tell me about it, because I really don't need that.

In other news, David and I are having a smashing good time this weekend. Well, not really, it's been pretty mediocre, but I think he's having an okay time. He liked the movie, at least, and that's something. Plus, we went to a KSU baseball game (we left after the fourth inning though, because it was colder than hell) and we grilled and we ate out... I think that was pretty much all that was on the agenda. I don't know what we'll do before he leaves tomorrow, but I sure hope that it's fun. Right now he's doing homework, but I'm going to see if I can't be a bad influence on him and take him over to play board games at Jason's. Or here. Who knows!

Thursday, March 18

Long time. I'm in another period of posting decline, which is all right, I guess, for me at least, since I know me and know what is going on in my life. It must suck for you all though.

All two of you.

Spring break is coming up, and that is going to be nice. My brother is coming out here to spend the weekend with me, and then on Monday I am driving home to Olathe until Friday, since I haven't been home since Christmas.

The only thing between me and freedom is a class I haven't done the reading for and a midterm exam I haven't studied for. But, hey... it's what I do.

Fight Club finally came; I called them a month after the first copy had "shipped"over a month ago, and they told me that it got lost in transit, so they sent me a new one. It actually arrived just this morning. The UPS guy knocked and rang the doorbell at the same time... which is something I always associate with familiarity. Apparently he is just a personable guy who likes his job. Perhaps I should apply at UPS myself.

Thursday, March 11

I need to write things down more when I think them. I have these minor little "epiphanies"... something strikes me as interesting, beautiful, or just worth musing on for a sentence or two... but I am always sans pen and paper. Then I get back here to the intellectual void that is my apartment, and I lose it all. Bah. I got my black and white film back. There're some pretty good photos, but nothing as incendiary as I'd like. Maybe it's not the photos that are all a bit boring... maybe it's my life. And maybe that lack of excitement (or at least of anything mildly thought provoking) is creeping into my creative endeavors. Take my most recent short story, for example...
I'm Awesome. I beat Spider Solitaire tonight with all four suits... on my first try! I haven't played in a long time, so I am pretty proud of myself. My final score was 1006, and I completed the beast in 294 moves, which I think is pretty good.

... and, I just beat that score, winning a second time in a row with 1027 points in 276 moves. I'm going to bed now!

Thursday, March 4

League Night. Tonight is league night, which is exciting. Hopefully we'll do well. Let me rephrase that... hopefully I'll do well. I'm the only team member who hasn't practiced since our last match last Thursday. I guess the main thing is that I'm really not in the mood to receive unsolicited advice, which I am bound to receive unless my rolls are impeccable, which is rare.

I participated in part one of three fragrance studies that I will be doing this and next week, the end result of which is $50... just for sniffing twenty-two little bottles. Magnifique!

Tonight I think the friends are flocking to the bars, which means I'll be having a quiet evening at home. Not that that's bad. It just sucks.

It's rainy today... actually it has been since yesterday. Today, though, I noticed hundreds of little worms dying on the sidewalk. It was really tragic. I'm sure the experience will creep into a story of mine sometime in the future.... I was going to write about it here, but then I just kind of lost the drive. Typical.

Another thing I noticed today was this girl's shoelaces in my American Survey class. They were bright blue, and written on them in yellow was the repeated phrase "Boys Lie". I read them over and over... "Boys Lie" "Boys Lie" "Boys Lie" "Boys Lie" "Boys Lie" "Boys Lie" "Boys Lie" "Boys Lie" "Boys Lie" "Boys Lie" "Boys Lie" "Boys Lie" "Boys Lie" "Boys Lie" "Boys Lie".... until I hated myself. Which is where I'm at now. Happy Bowling!

Tooth Update. I went to the dentist this morning at 8:00 (mom got in town at 7:15). I had two root canals (one in each tooth) which, contrary to all I've ever heard about them, really weren't that painful. The worst part was the numbing process... they had to inject anisthetic into the "pulp" of each tooth... which really sucked. Then there was just a lot of drilling and sawing and pushing and pulling and...

VOILA!

I have two new teeth. The top one is weird... it's kind of angled funny, but the dentist said that it would get squared up once they put a cap over it in about a month. The bottom one is interesting... a lot smaller than its predecessor, and they had to put a "post" in the middle of it because basically there was nothing left to support a tooth. So, you can see the post through the new "tooth", which makes it look a little dark. According to the good Doctor, though, this too should be remedied once they put a cap on it.

So now I can eat, and say words with s's in them, and pretty much perform like a functioning member of society.

That was the most exciting part of my day, really. I have to make up my Geography exam sometime, and I have class tonight.... plus, I didn't get a post done that was due for my American Survey class today at noon, so that's the stuff I'll be working on tonight.

Tuesday, March 2

Fractured Smile. Have you ever seen Breaking the Waves? It's about this woman named Bess who prays to God to send home her husband Jan who is away working on an oil rig, and He does... by sending Jan home with a debilitating injury.

I had a similar thing happen to me today. I wanted oh so badly to not have to work tonight, and my prayers were answered! HALELUJAH (how do you spell that?)!

When I got to work, my boss, Vicki, was trying to open a large wooden crate with a hammer, and asked for my help. I, the big, burly man that I am, went out and began to pry away brilliantly at the wooden crate until, as luck should have it, the hammer slipped, causing me to ram the handle of the hammer into my mouth. It didn't hurt so much, but when I felt two pieces of my teeth rattling around in my mouth, I knew that it wasn't good.

SO... I went to the emergency room... they put temporary caps on the two broken teeth and prescribed me some pain killers and antibiotics. Tomorrow morning at 8:00am I have an appointment with a dentist, where I will be the lucky recipient of two root canals courtesy of Cold Stone Creamery.

I knew I loved this job for a reason.

So, a minor kink on the road to total hotness... hopefully it all comes out well in the end.

The Tyranny of My Own Ignorance. It's something I suffer from. Or maybe it's the tyranny of laziness that I suffer from. Either way, it keeps me from doing the things I ought to be doing. Tyrannical Conviviality? Is that a possibility?

Am I an epicurean just because I hope to live my life as an artist rather than a capitalist (because, let's face it, the two are, for all practical purposes, mutually exclusive. Then again, that might just be the tyrannical ignorance/laziness talking. In fact, I think the ignorance is probably a result of the laziness, which is in turn a result of the conviviality...)

This post is so over. Thanks to Thomas Jefferson for the inspiration.
Oscar. The party last night went off without a hitch... except for the fact that I was running low on time and so was in the shower when people started showing up. But all in all, it was a good time. I was happy for all the Lord of the Rings love... I think it was well deserved. Bill Murray was snubbed, as was Keisha-Castle Hughes (probably the most deserving performance of all the best actresses... although I haven't seen Monster or 21 Grams. FYI: she's going to be in the next Star Wars movie.) Nicole looked great, as always. Charlize Theron looked like she laid in the tanning bed a little too long. Jennifer Garner looked like a man. My favorite moment... the whole Will Ferrell/Jack Black thing. ":::whisper::: Sting." So brilliant.

In other news, I applied to the internship with Random House, so wish me luck with that. I also... well.... what else have I done? Oh... wait.... nothing.

Life is good, nevertheless. I'm working on picking out my classes for next year. If I don't do a minor in Spanish, I only have 14 credit hours left to take. That means only three more English classes, one life science, and a foreign language class (although, I should already have it, so if I do decide to skip the minor, which I probably shouldn't, then I'll definitely check in on that.) If I get this internship, though... or any internship for that matter, I probably won't minor in Spanish, and instead focus on getting started on my career rather than preparing myself for grad school.
